Scotgreens Frequently Asked Questions

Where can artificial grass be installed?

Scotgreens surfaces can be installed in a variety of places where natural grass would normally be found – and some where it wouldn’t – from problem shaded or wet areas where natural growth is difficult to those really difficult to maintain areas where mowing may be a hassle. Some examples are: domestic lawns, garden golf greens, office building lawns, show homes, children's nurseries, play areas, dog runs, shops, hotels, exhibitions, bird cages, swimming pools, roof terraces, decking cover, grass verges etc.  We have even done garage floors and the deck of a ship!

Is Scotgreens artificial grass safe for children and pets?

Absolutely!  Apart from ground conditions, children, dogs and children and dogs together are the key reasons for installing artificial lawns.

Is Scotgreens artificial grass damaging to the environment?

No.  Artificial grass requires no water, no pesticides, no fertilisers or the use of energy or fuel to maintain it. With the way the climate is changing, having a perfect lawn without the need to water or fertilise it could actually be beneficial. Many products are also beginning to use recycled fibres in their manufacture as well.

Does your artificial turf require any maintenance?

Artificial grass is very low maintenance, but not completely maintenance free.  Sand dressed products require brushing from time to time to stop the in-fill from settling too much. An occasional top up of sand (after perhaps the first 2 to 3 years) may also be required.  The products with no in-fill will also require an occasional brush since any non sand-filled grass will flatten slightly through time.  On all grasses you need to prevent an excessive build-up of leaves and debris to prevent any kind of moss forming.  Click here for further maintenance tips.

Can weeds penetrate the grass?

No.  As it is produced using a very strong latex backing the roots of the weeds have no chance of penetrating it.  This also applies to moles and rabbits trying to burrow through the surface. As an additional precaution, we normally lay a weed suppressant membrane under the artificial grass, since a weed or perhaps worms can occasionally get through drainage holes in the grass.

Is Scotgreens artificial grass suitable for poorly drained areas?

Yes. The grass has a latex backing with holes punched in a grid to allow water to drain quickly through the surface. In very poor ground conditions the grass can be laid over a stone hard core base allowing the base, assisting the water to drain away.  In extreme situations proper drainage can also be used.

Are Scotgreens artificial lawns almost like the real thing?

Yes.  Choosing the right grass for your garden means it can be difficult to distinguish at a glance between our turf and the real thing.  The latest polyethylene fibre surfaces have different pile heights and shades of green to suit all tastes.

Can I install artificial grass myself?

Yes.  Scotgreens can provide a full step by step installation guide and can supply you with all the help and materials necessary for you to carry out the installation yourself, although there are elements of an installation that require extra care and knowledge, for example cutting, shaping and joining the grass.  It can also be extremely heavy, physically demanding and time consuming work.  Specialist tools also help.

Does Scotgreens artificial grass lose its colour?

No.  Our turf is manufactured to the highest standards using fibres that have been UV stabilised against colour fade.  Guarantees on the turf apply to hot sunny conditions such as Nevada in the USA as well as the climate in the UK, so we should be OK in Scotland!

Is Scotgreens turf guaranteed?

The surfaces are covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee ranging from 5 to 10 years against fading and 1 year against manufacturing defect, depending on the product purchased.  The life expectancy of the turf can be 15 to 20 years depending on usage.
